ACORN: Online Young Voter Organizer (MI) December 3, 2007

Michigan ACORN will be registering 196,000 voters during the 2008 election cycle, 61% of them will be young voters between the age of 18 and 29 years old. Our history suggests we will add 77,000 new voters to the electorate or over 1.5% of all projected voters in the presidential election in Michigan

The Michigan ACORN Young Urban Voter Collective’s plan for 2008 is to use the power of this voting block to move issue campaigns and to engage candidates on issues that affect young voters such as child care, jobs, and access to education.

We have a long history in community activism and organizing, but have a short-history of on-line communication. Much of the responsibility will be to create and develop online systems to enhance our campaign and electoral work

Votes is a coalition of the largest issue-based membership organizations in the nation, joined together to develop a permanent grassroots infrastructure within the progressive community. America Votes leads and serves 42 national and more than 260 state-based partner organizations. America Votes ensures that the enormous resources within the progressive political community – human and financial – are aggregated, coordinated, and applied to maximize the electoral impact of our partners. Our partner groups work on a broad range of issues including the environment, civil and human rights, reproductive rights, education, and labor. Position Description The America Votes State Director is responsible for working with state and locally based America Votes partner organizations to develop and execute a coordinated state plan that maximizes the resources and effectiveness of all partners and reduces duplication of efforts in the areas of voter outreach, education and turnout. The State Director will work with national staff, state partner groups and consultants to draft and implement a vote-goal based plan to turn out progressive voters in Michigan. The State Director will work with existing Michigan-based organizations and coalitions to identify shared goals and create non-duplicative work plans with a goal of having America Votes fit seamlessly into the existing network of progressive organizations, coalitions and meetings. The State Director will report to the Executive Director of America Votes.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with America Votes partner organizations and local groups to design overall statewide voter education and mobilization plans
  • Provide Technical assistance in the creation and execution of partner organization plans
  • Facilitate use of shared voter file including, matching membership, voter history and other updates:
  • Organize and conduct regular meetings of America Votes partner organizations.
  • Facilitate the appropriate sharing of data and information between partners.
  • Work directly with America Votes national staff and national partners to ensure smooth communication with state operations.

Qualifications A minimum of eight years experience in political or non-profit advocacy is required. Applicants ideally have a mix of both electoral campaign experience and organizing skills. Applicants must be a self-starter; be willing to work long and irregular hours and to travel. Compensation Salary is commensurate with experience. Benefits include health, dental, vision and 401K.
